So, I can tell you how I studied for the NBRC Board exam, but keep in mind it was back in 2017. Yes I'm old and proud of it! However, I can still give you some tips and tricks that may be useful!
1. Take the Practice Exams from the NBRC
So the NBRC has some free practice exams on their website. If you click the link below, you can find the practice exams.
I used these practice exams to gauge where my weaknesses were in regards to taking the exam. I used the exams as a benchmark and began titrating my study material from there. It was extremely useful and helpful to take these exams especially since they were a free resource.
2. Look at the TMC - Detailed Content Outline
Now, another extremely useful resource I used before taking the NBRC Board Exam was looking at the outline of the Board Exam Content. Again, the NBRC has this available on their website. Click the link below to view the outline for the exam content. This gives you a much better understanding of what content areas you need to focus your study time on.
3. Take a Self-Assessment exam from the NBRC
The NBRC also has some Self-Assessment exams that you must purchase in order to use. This is basically another practice exam that they charge you for. I have the link for that below as well!
TMC - Self-Assessment Exam - Must purchase from the NBRC.
CSE - Self Assessment Exam - Must purchase from the NBRC.
4. Kettering Practice Exams
Now, I also used Kettering Seminars to study. Fortunately for my class, our school paid for a Kettering representative to come out and do a two day seminar with us to review the content of the board exam as well as the strategies associated with passing the exam.
If you are interested in taking the free Kettering practice tests, click below.
5. Purchase Kettering Tokens
Kettering also has tokens which you can purchase to practice through more modules of the TMC and the CSE. If you are interested in purchasing tokens, click the link below.
6. Ventilator Titrations and Scenarios
Use the Vent Titrations and Scenarios eBook from the RTRC to get some more practice problems in and better prepare yourself for the board exam. I will say that the problems from the RTRC are much more affordable than these other options and they are currently on sale! Of course, you should exhaust all free options and then begin to think about purchasing more study materials. The practice exams should be used as a bench mark and should help you gain an understanding of the testing format, however, you need to study the content and test-taking strategies as well!

There are a few other Respiratory Care Board Exam materials out there and I'm sure they are very useful, however, I solely used Kettering and the NBRC practice exams as well as their study books and other study materials. I passed with flying colors, but studied my butt off! It definitely made a difference that my school purchased the two day Kettering seminar for us and helped up get down the proper test taking strategies. Our school did a great job of teaching the content found in the detailed content outline, so really, it was just the test taking strategies we were in need of at the time. Anyways, I hope this blog post has been helpful and please don't hesitate to reach out and ask some questions. Have a great day!
